using parkinson's law

In today’s Time Management Tip, I’ll share with you how you can use Parkinsons Law to your benefit.

What is Parkinson’s Law?

Parkinson’s Law states that work expands to fill the time available for its completion. What this means is that, given a certain amount of time, the task at hand will fill that time. Give the task more time and it will take the additional time to complete the task.

Using Parkinson’s Law

Parkinson’s Law is one of the reasons time blocking is so effective. Effective time blocking can demonstrate how using Parkinson’s Law can be beneficial to your productivity. It forces boundaries on the time you set aside for specific tasks. Knowing you only have one hour to answer emails means you will stay focused and get through the emails much faster than if you don’t have a specific amount of time set aside.

While you do not need to use time blocking to effectively use Parkinson’s Law, it can be a great place to start. Time blocking it is simply a way of scheduling time on your calendar to accomplish certain tasks.

Some of the most successful young entrepreneurs of our time are using Parkinson’s Law to their benefit. They’ve decided they don’t want to work 18 hour days and put a limit on their time. With this limit, they have forced themselves to work as productively and focused as possible. Amazingly, they often accomplish more than many of the individuals that are burning the candle at both ends.
