The more time I find myself playing around with Facebook, the more I realize I’m practicing procrastination. The more I practice procrastination, the more I am moving myself away from resistance, but not in the direction I want to go. Resistance shows up when I’m about to delve deep into a meaningful piece of my work. It may be developing new content, the development of a new program, stepping into new territory or considering a new opportunity. It’s the part that scares me the most. The uncertainty, the wobbly legs, the quickened heartbeat and procrastination are all tell-tale signs that something BIG is going on here.
It may not even look big to the outside world. But to you it feels like a giant. It could be the point of reaching a decision. It could be a shift in perspective. It could be placing a different value on something you already knew. It might be asking your boss to let you in on a project you have your eyes on. These changes are significant. How you approach them will determine your future outcomes and therefore, your quality of life.
Catch yourself in your procrastination. Become a detective exploring what it is about that piece for you in that moment.
WHAT PROCRASTINATION LOOKS LIKE
This is a short list of some of the different ways you might use procrastination as a distraction;
- TV, online surfing, YouTube,
- Visiting friends longer or more often than you need to
- Working out more than you need to
- Mindless activities, like shopping for no reason, flipping through pages of magazines
- Staying at the office late
- Volunteering yourself for additional projects when you’re already strapped for time
- Snacking too much, eating too much, drinking too much or doing drugs to numb out
- Excessively checking e-mails and Social Media posts
- Checking out a situation for the third time to make sure you are understanding it accurately for your own comfort
- Anywhere that you recognize that you’re just wasting time without being productive
Procrastination is different than down time or taking time off to relax, re-energize and rejuvenate. Taking time off is really good for you. It comes with a long list of benefits including, reducing stress, increasing vitality, igniting a new level of creativity. It’s actually a trait of highly successful people. But recent studies have shown that about 75 percent of Americans do not take all of their allotted vacation time. And even when they do, they are not completely unplugged. That’s a whole other topic for discussion.
Procrastination, however, is destructive. Instead of helping you, it’s hurting you. It keeps you from reaching your goals. It keeps you from having the kind of lifestyle you desire. It keeps you from being your best, which translates into your own happiness.
IN THE FACE OF PROCRASTINATION
Next time you are hit with procrastination, consider these three things,
- Recognize that you are in procrastination and acknowledge that for yourself.
- Notice the specific activity and circumstances that you are attempting, but avoiding.
- What is it specifically that you don’t want to do / face?Is it the activity itself? Is it what happens when the activity is completed? Is it having to face someone once it’s done? What is it about that particular situation?
You may not be able to pinpoint it the first time out, but keep at it. The more often you pay attention, the closer you will get to the answer. The closer you get to the answer, the more you begin to understand yourself. Once you are able to figure it out, you are then in a position to consider your options. That might include never doing that type of project again, you may realize that diving in and doing it was a lot easier than you were anticipating or you may begin to recognize that sometimes you are better off hiring someone else to do that job.
You don’t have to get stuck in your procrastination, but once you understand it, you can use it to your benefit.
